It started as a satire of a local crime and the song writing effort of three friends working for charity suddenly found themselves in the national spotlight. Youngstown lawyer and songwriter Alan Matavich began with lyrics that spoofed a record-breaking armored-car heist. Alan, a Board member of the A Way With Words Foundation, Inc., asked his friend Brenda Rider to put the song to music. They both turned to Mike Talanca to arrange and record the final CD. Mike, a professional sound engineer, helped fine tune the lyrics and music while he was singing and arranging the song in his studio. All three decided to combine their talents to raise money for the A Way With Words Foundation, Inc. to support its work with cancer survivors. Within days of its initial release, the songs creators were interviewed by local and national press. They appeared a number of times on local radio and TV stations. When the alleged robber Dillon came up for a court hearing, the New York Times ran an article on the CD. |

The "Dumb as Dillon" music CD has sold well, helped by the surprising amount of publicity over the song. The song could be heard on several Youngstown area radio stations (Y103, Y105, WKBN 570, Louie Free Show on AM 1500 ) and on some other metropolitan US radio stations, due in part to the press attention from local and national newspapers. Published by the A Way With Words Foundation, Inc., the CDs can be purchased directly at Glorious Homes, Inc. on P.O. Box 4532, Austintown, Ohio Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm EST. Phone sales are also accepted during these hours by calling (330) 538-7000. All sales from the "Dumb as Dillon" benefit the R.O.C.c.K. Children's Choir. Sales prior to the new year also benefited the Toys for Tots program. The Choir is now raising money towards their trip in June 2008 to the Victory Junction Gang Camp, where they will perform for the campers during the week that cancer is the focus of the program. The increased popularity of the songs has made this trip more a reality each day. Founded by Kyle and Pattie Petty, the Victory Junction Gang Camp provides children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses a life-changing experience in a fun, safe environment. R.O.C.c.K. Choir members are looking forward to do what they do best:
